Chick season at Silver Maple Farm starts in the fall and winter when birds will be earmarked for the breeding program. The Coop is very small so the show birds must do double duty as breeders. About 50 birds are retained to keep the genetic programs going. The birds are paired up and the protein is increased in their diet. Birds are gone over for body condition, and notes are made as to each birds strengths and weaknesses. Their lineage is also considered when it comes to the mating program as well as the goals that we are setting for the genetic program and the birds.
